The first outbreak of bluetongue above the 50°N parallel was recorded in August 2006. Since then the disease has exploded across Europe with 2000 cases by the end of 2006 rising to over 45000 cases in 2007.  In 2008 the disease has been found to be circulating again with new cases identified in Holland, Germany, Belgium and most specifically France.
